Starting with the 2028 calls, the European Research Council (ERC) will introduce a new thematic evaluation panel for “Fundamentals of AI” (PE12). The ERC is responding to the growing importance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in computer science and the high share of AI-related project proposals currently submitted to the existing Computer Science Evaluation Panel (PE6). The new panel will focus on fundamental research into the foundations, methods and theories of Artificial Intelligence. Its scope will include, among others, machine learning, intelligent and autonomous systems, computer vision, and the mathematical and statistical foundations of AI. Research applications of AI in specific scientific fields will continue to be submitted to the respective ERC panels relevant to those fields. The new PE12 panel will be introduced for the first time for the ERC 2028 calls.
